Moose On The Loose

(Myrmecoleo Records '02)

What`s to say about this baby? Moose On The Loose: Finnish Garaoke has the best of the best from Finnish rock-scene. This tightly-packed compilation starts with Le Mutant by The Mutants, a song which always brings a particular scene from Pulp Fiction into my mind. The Mutants (an interview is online) are certainly an admireable group with their own personal style and sound, and this song gives a good start. After that, rock on Sweatmaster. This band has been highly praised and hyped as one of the most original Finnish rock-bands up to date. These two songs, Too Much Love and Tonight, surely give a small bite of what`s expected. Going forth through Thee Ultra Bimboos with their hooky tracks Jukka Perkele and Liar Liar! on to more stoner-influenced Sunride with Jetride-A-Like and Deadwrong Companion. The followers, Touble Bound Gospel, don`t offer as groovy or ear-catching tunes as those before them. Their track Prehistoric actually makes me feel a bit irritated, but hopefully Lil` Bull loosens the mood a bit. Then we hear two tracks from a band that doesn`t need any introductions (but if you do, read an interview on this site!), The Flaming Sideburns. Their hit single Flowers strikes up first and is followed by Emotional Son, which also appears on The Hellacopter /w The Flaming Sideburns-split White Trash Soul. The rest of the compilation is filled up with tracks from The Festermen, Branded Women, 20 Minuters, Cosmo Jones Beat Machine and Pushrods, who all give into this great compilation. I give my thumbs up for Branded Women who, with their songs Explanations and Perfect, manage to bring some trouble-frightening calmness and perfection on this comp. Although many other good Finnish bands could have been included on this one, this is a good introduction to Finnish rock-n-roll-scene as it is today.
