Struggle Minds etc..

Club Water, Osaka 13/10/02

Same place, same time! Tonight there were six bands playing. The show was started by a local band called Fahners Witch. Their musical style was something of between emo-indies and grunge, mixed with bits and pieces of funk. Not a bad act at all; the guys knew how to play and didn`t seem to nervous. The songs worked and although the lyrics were in Japanese, I enjoyed it. Their show lasted for about 30 minutes.

Second band on-stage was S41. They were purely a hardcore-band and played five songs in about 7 minutes. Not much to say about them, the songs didn`t make any sense and the singer just screamed maliciously.

Third band was called Dip Leg and they were much like Fahners Witch. Funky-rock-emo-indies-mixture with experimental guitar-effects. Five songs and a bit of a bore, but I didn`t fall asleep. Where Fahners Witch failed, they did good and viceversa.

Fourth band was Struggle Minds and the music was melancholic powerpop mixed with some funk-elements and also some punkrock-stuff like Bad Religion and Green Day. Five songs, over thirty minutes. A pretty good show, I should say. Got me almost jumping!

Fifth on-stage, Tlizi. For me this was - along with Fahners Witch - the best act of that night. Tlizi played semi-progressive-grindcore-punk, mixed with occasional funkadelics. Their guitarist/singer looked exactly like Doc Brown from Back To The Future, but with short hair. Unbelieveable songs, unique time-changes, stunning vocalizations and brutal atmosphere guaranteed my thumbs up! If you ever have a chance to see `em, DO IT!

Sixth, last and worst band on-stage was Earwax. Straightedge grindcore and the singer sounded like he was gargling razors, but in a bad way. I watched two songs and go the hell out of the club. Luckily I spent some time jabbering with every band (except Earwax) and now had demos and releases from everyone (free, of course). Read reviews on the later from this same website!
